Robert (Bert) Ballard has a Ph.D. in Human Communication Studies (University of Denver) with an emphasis in rhetoric and communication ethics (2008), He has a wide range of research interests including ethnographic and phenomenological approaches to understanding communication ethics, in particular the works of Emmanuel Levinas. He also conducts qualitative research on the identity formation and internal/external interactions of international adoptive families and international adoptees. He has been published in Qualitative Inquiry, Communication Monographs, the Journal of Family Communication, and New Directions for Teaching and Learning. He recently published a book entitled Pieces of Me: Who Do I Want to Be? for adopted teenagers. He was the co-chair for the inaugural Intercountry Adoption Summit, which brought together government representatives, adoption service providers, and researchers to discuss the current status of intercountry adoption around the world. He has won over eight top paper awards at various national and international communication conferences and has been recognized as an exemplary teacher by the National Communication Association. He is currently on the editorial board for the Journal of Family Communication. Bert teaches courses in communication ethics, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and family communication.
